If you’ve ever rented or owned a self-storage unit (or still do) then you already know how crucial it is to properly label your boxes for easy access.
Whether it’s household items, office documents or seasonal items, it can sometimes be challenging, however, to track everything and find it in a timely and fuss-free manner when you really need to.
Here’s what you can do to label your items properly so that you can access them just as easily when the time comes:
How to properly label items for your self-storage container
This can’t be stressed on enough: no matter how many times your friends, family or loved ones tell you that you must label anything you’re storing or planning to use later, the importance never really fades. So, yes – it is that important!
By properly labelling your boxes to be put away in your container, you will make the packing and unpacking process really easy for yourself. Plus, when you need to find things in a jiffy, you’ll never have to get stuck in a frenzy as you’ll know exactly where everything is and how to access it.
If you need labelling suggestions for each individual box, here are a few:
· My things or ‘my personal stuff’
· Office supplies
· Books, stationery, magazines, etc.
· ‘Old stuff I don’t need’ or something like ‘stuff I want to sell’
· Highly school memorabilia
· My electronics and gadgets
There’s a lot of room for experimentation, so go all out! However, it’s important to not mix up items – for example, you don’t want any old magazines or newspaper cutouts, for example, in the ‘electronics and gadgets’ box – so when you label a box, take extra care to only put items in there that truly belong.
Labelling and organising items – How to stay consistent
There may be lots of stuff to sift through, sure, there usually is! It’s also understandable that it can sometimes be human nature to lose motivation halfway through, given the huge volume of items to pack and tuck away.
Listen – we’ve all been there! If you’re finding it cumbersome or tiring to label, organise, and pack away all your items, don’t try to do it in one go. Take breaks, relax, have some fun. Even do it the next day if it makes more sense.
The key thing to remember is to get a tempo going. Once you do get back to it, don’t allow yourself to be distracted – like checking your smartphone or thinking about that new Xbox game you can’t wait to try out! Again, take breaks, but put limitations on yourself: a cup of coffee or a stroll in your backyard is fine, binging on Netflix episodes is not!
Organise things by order of necessity and in a heavy-light manner
Very important! Heavy items go at the bottom, light ones on top.
Are there items you may need to fetch or retrieve more regularly? Place them closer to the container’s door/access latch and place them on top rather than at the very bottom.
